Celebrating their first SALSA Approval with a BANG!

BANG Curry was created by a former physicist with a calling to introduce Bangladeshi cuisine to the world of scratch cooking.

Often unsung, Bangladeshi cuisine is noted for being light, yet rich and flavoursome, with unique spice blends and distinctive regional flavours.   Bang Curry founder Shelly Nuruzzaman was inspired at an early age when learning to cook alongside her mother and wanted to share the joy of the food that was and remains, such a special part of her family life.

BANG Curry started in 2013 with its roots in Brick Lane in London’s East End, nicknamed Bangla Town.   Typically, Bangladeshi food is not fiery hot; it is gentler in its aromatics, with flavours drawn from Bangladesh’s lush and tropical landscapes of densely entwined rivers. As well as making traditional meat curries, these softer flavours go particularly well with vegetables and rice – perfect for those wanting a light but still tasty diet.  All Bang’s kits and mixes are suitable for vegans and vegetarians.

Bangladeshi cooking has stood the test of time and migration.  In 2017 it came as a huge honour for BANG Curry to be awarded Best Product in 2017 by the UK Bangladesh Catalysts of Commerce & Industry (UKBCCI).  Today, with a new-found confidence and their first SALSA certification under their belt, Bang’s core spice blends come in 6 curry kits and 3 recipe kits – including a new launch 'Bang Biryani'.  These can be used to create many different dishes from a simple base, by just adding onions, garlic and ginger, and then the meat, fish or vegetables of choice.

Shelly is delighted with her first SALSA.  “In May this year SALSA Approval became our latest achievement.  We knew it was necessary for our small business to enter a bigger arena and although it was time-consuming at first, once everything was in place it made perfect sense and gave us great structure to move forward with.”

SALSA’s Bonnie Joplin adds, “Bang Curry made full use of SALSA’s library of Tools & Tips to implement the Standard. They were organised and diligent in their approach, leading to a successful audit and approval.  It’s great to celebrate the success of a business that clearly put safety and quality at the heart of everything they do.”

Today, Bang products are available online as well as with independent and national retailers. Bang hope their unique offering will attract new buyers looking for something different to add lustre to scratch cooking’s array of exciting kits and mixes.  Meanwhile, it’s onwards and upwards for Bang Curry, says Shelly. “Watch this space for 2019, there are some exciting developments underway.  Our new look will stay true to our Bangladesh heritage, but have a very modern feel, using vibrant colours for strong retail appeal. The future is bright for BANG Curry!”

Approval certification is only granted to Suppliers who are able to demonstrate to a SALSA auditor that they are able to produce safe and legal food and are committed to continually meeting the requirements of the SALSA Standard.

SALSA is a not-for-profit joint venture between the four main trade associations representing the UK food chain ie the National Farmers Union, the British Retail Consortium, the British Hospitality Association and the Food and Drink Federation. The Institute of Food Science & Technology operates the Scheme.
