Montgomery's Cheddar Wins!


Montgomery’s Cheddar, from the lush countryside of Somerset, is an iconic British cheese. Known for its distinctive taste, the cheese’s history dates back over a century. Over the years, the Montgomery family has passed down their knowledge and passion for cheddar-making from one generation to the next. Today, Jamie Montgomery continues to uphold the family legacy, overseeing the production of Montgomery Cheddar and ensuring that the traditional methods and commitment to quality are preserved.

In 2012 Montgomery’s had their first SALSA plus Cheese audit and since then have had successful audits every year.

Montgomery's won the ‘Best SALSA plus Cheese’ trophy for their Mature Traditional Cheddar at this year's Virtual Cheese Awards.  This award recognised the highest-scoring cheese in the competition with SALSA plus Cheese Approval.

The SALSA plus Cheese Standard is designed specifically for small cheesemakers in the UK. It includes all the clauses of a standard SALSA audit, plus additional clauses written by the Specialist Cheesemakers Association – to cover all aspects of cheesemaking.

Audits and mentoring are carried out by a small team of expert cheese auditors and mentors, hand-picked by the SCA for their experience with the SALSA Standard and cheesemaking knowledge. The mentors have a wealth of experience in cheesemaking and take a pragmatic and understanding approach to support the cheesemaking business in achieving food safety certification.
