Meet Fidelma Pogorelow, SALSA Auditor and Mentor since 2023
We talked to SALSA Auditor & Mentor, Fidelma Pogorelow, about her experiences working with small food and drink producers across the UK and her passion for the food industry.
HI Fidelma, how long have you worked in the food and drink industry?
I have worked in the food and drink industry for over 30 years, including high-risk foods, before moving into the raw meat industry. Both categories were interesting to work in, presenting new challenges every day.
What was your first food job?
I was employed in Quality Assurance in the ready meals sector, where I had two roles. One, as quality assurance, auditing the production and storage areas. The other part of my week involved testing the finished product in the laboratory.
How long have you worked for SALSA?
I have worked for SALSA for five years as an auditor/mentor. Each site has its own unique process, some straightforward but effective, others more complex. Auditing the same site for three consecutive years enables me to watch the member grow in their food safety systems.
What is the most important piece of advice you can give a Supplier preparing for an audit?
Take the time to read the SALSA standard, the interpretation guide and the Tools and Tips.
This time is an investment and will help achieve a successful SALSA audit.
What do you enjoy most about SALSA auditing and mentoring?
I enjoy the range of product categories, my favourite being ready-to-eat meals and raw meat. The SALSA members are a dream to work with and want the best for their business. I love watching new members gain more business after achieving their SALSA certificate, and continue to grow, both financially and in their food safety systems, over the course of the three years auditing them. The first SALSA audit is a big step for a business, and I enjoy being part of the journey.
