Montgomery's Cheddar VCA Supreme Champion!


The Virtual Cheese Awards were founded in 2020 to help support and celebrate British cheesemakers struggling during the Covid-19 pandemic. The Awards have grown steadily in the last three years with over 240 individual entries from across the British cheese industry in the 2023 Awards and thousands of people logging on to see live cheese judging and the winning cheeses announced.

Many of the cheeses that enter the Virtual Cheese Awards hold the SALSA plus Cheese Standard and this year we worked with VCA to create the ‘Best SALSA plus Cheese’ Trophy – awarded to the highest-scoring cheese in the Awards that holds the Standard.

The SALSA plus Cheese Standard is designed specifically for small cheesemakers in the UK. It includes all the clauses of a standard SALSA audit, plus additional clauses written by the Specialist Cheesemakers Association – to cover all aspects of cheesemaking. There simply is no other food safety Standard written specifically for Cheese!

We are delighted to announce that J.A & E. Montgomery Ltd have won the best ‘SALSA plus Cheese’ Trophy and ‘Supreme Champion’ for their Mature Traditional Cheddar at this year’s Awards.

J.A & E. Montgomery Ltd have been SALSA members since 2012 and were one of the first UK cheesemakers to gain the Plus Cheese Standard. We are very proud that this cheesemaker, with a distinguished heritage, has won the first ‘Best SALSA plus Cheese’ Trophy.
