The British Honey Company buzzes with SALSA

Based in the North Oxfordshire Cotswolds, with its abundance of wildflowers, rolling hills and blossom, it’s not surprising that The British Honey Company started producing a fragrant range of unadulterated raw British honeys. Today, the Company, which employs 5 full-time staff, also supply honey from beekeepers and farmers across the UK, with varieties which include Cotswolds Honey, Borage Honey, Heather Honey, and Apple Blossom Honey from the Bulmers Apple Orchards, to name a few.  It may also come as a revelation to some that all honeys are gluten-free.

Gaining SALSA certification in 2015 was a significant milestone for the business. “We are really pleased to be SALSA certified. Approval has been an important part of our growth and ongoing success.  The certification provides confidence to our customers and is a springboard for us to start contacting bigger organisations that only use SALSA approved suppliers,’ says Eddie Edwards, Operations Manager.

The Company benefited from the range of services offered by SALSA, attending a SALSA HACCP L2 course in 2015.  Phil Haraman who attended comments, ‘It was an excellent course, with clear information relayed by experienced trainers who ensured all queries were answered and relevant to our business.’

With a commitment to the production of only the purest British Honey, The British Honey Company have also been working with Oxford and Reading Universities to develop ground-breaking technology in DNA, Pollen and Isotope to test honey back to its original source, and trace suspect honey containing chemicals and other impurities.   Oliver Williams, Sales Director, comments, ‘We’re a veritable hive of industry here!  We not only make honey, we are out and about spreading the word, holding events and honey tastings at food and deli shows, as well as educating people in the properties of honey and the protection of our bee population. We are also producing a series of mini-videos with some exciting sweet and savoury food and drink recipes using our range of honeys.’

With products now widely available across the UK, The British Honey Company currently supply over 100 farm shops and delis including the new Soho Farmhouse at Great Tew, north Oxfordshire, The National Trust, English Heritage, Midcounties Co-operative and many more.
