Small is beautiful - and bottled!

Hadrian & Border Brewery produce traditional caskconditioned ales and filtered beers in bottle. Although growth has been steady over the last 20 years, demand for distinctively named real ales has rocketed, and the proliferation of small breweries means the market place is becoming very crowded.

Many will know that British tastes in beers have shifted hugely in recent years, with sales of stronger-tasting ale and stout continuing to grow at the expense of lager, all competing for a share of a £16bn market.  With this in mind, Hadrian & Border needed something to put them ahead of the other breweries in the North East of England.

It was recognised that as they currently only put around 5% of their production into individual 500ml and 330ml bottles and gift box formats, increasing their output in these single bottle formats would help them take the lead, opening up a new niche and ensuring their market share.  Their best selling beers include Tyneside Blonde, a golden ale and Farne Island, an amber coloured pale ale which will be known to many craft beer fans across the UK. The names have reflected the geographical location of the brewery which started its early days in Berwick upon Tweed but moved to Tyneside 13 years ago.

Their brand new custom-built 35-barrel plant in Newburn, Tyneside (and ten strong brewing team) has enabled them to keep up with growing customer demand.  These strengths, combined with their recent SALSA certification mean that the Brewery’s products are now accessible to a whole new range of potential customers across the northeast of England and increasingly further afield.  Their beers are now stocked as far north as Edinburgh.

Andy Burrows, Managing Director, says, ‘The audit was passed with no issues and we can now approach all our customers with confidence in the quality and safety of our products”.
